Litherland Davies & Co

Brass bound mahogany two-day marine chronometer, signed Litherland, Davies & Co, Liverpool and numbered 217/12413, circa 1830.

Chain fusee movement with maintaining power, diamond endstones for the balance wheel, freesprung blued steel helical spring with terminal curve, Earnshaw type detent escapement, cut and compensated bimetallic balance wheel, signed and numbered enamel dial with two subsidiaries: state of wind in 3 hour divisions up to 54 hours; and running seconds. Gimbaled bowl, mahogany case with brass mounted corners and two blank ivory identification plates.

Peter Litherland

(1756-1804), established in Liverpool, 20 Mount Pleasant then 47 Brownlow Hill, inventor and watchmaker. The workshop became Litherland & Whiteside & Co in 1800, then Litherland & Davies in 1816. Two known marine chronometers with that signature are respectively numbered 317 and 315, and dated 1833 and 1834.
