L'Amérique, a French Consulate period (1799-1803) ormolu and
patinated bronze 'au bon sauvage' mantel clock.
America is represented by a woman, partially covered
in a feather dress, the kaiman crocodile
is a caracteristic of the New World.
This unique version of this  model is possibly one of the
very first made, with a pink ormolu base with matted garlands
held by ribbon-snakes on a white marble plinth.
Also to be noted on this particular model are the wider ankle bracelets,
the tight necklace and the blue eyes,
all indicating a very early model made by Jean-Simon de Verberie
for the clockmaker BauSse, established here Cour Mandar N° 7.
Enamel dial with Arabic numerals, extra outer quarter-hours markers
and inner indications for a Revolutionary period
30-day calendar. Very finely pierced guilt hands for the hours and minutes,
blued steel hand for the calendar.

Good neo-classical cartonnier French Louis XVI ormolu and bronze sculptural mantel clock,
signed Mercier à Paris, circa 1770, 13-cm enamel dial with Roman numerals,
pierced and engraved gilt hands, flat bottomed countwheel striking anchor
movement with silk suspended pendulum, the mainsprings signed Richard and dated 1777.
Ormolu case flanked by two patinated bronze classical ladies
personifying Justice and Wisdom, as designed by Antoine Foullet
and executed by Augustin Pajou. The two female green patinated antique bronze female
figures: on the right, Justice, very graciously resting on her elbow with a sword in
one hand and a balance in the other; on the left: Wisdom, with a snake symbolising
intelligence rolled around the left arm, and a mirror symbolising thinking and
self-knowledge. Rectangular base with acanthus leaves and pomegranate high relief
on matted background, on toupee feet.
The overall equilibrium of this composition and the refinement of its execution, along
with the exquisite quality of the original gilding and chafing make it a particularly
sought after model from the neo-classical period in the decorative arts.
