Good neo-classical cartonnier French Louis XVI ormolu and bronze
sculptural mantel clock,
signed Vincent, circa 1775, 13-cm enamel dial with Arabic numerals,
pierced and engraved gilt hands, flat bottomed countwheel striking anchor
movement with silk suspended pendulum.
Ormolu case flanked by two patinated bronze classical ladies
personifying Justice and Wisdom, as designed by Antoine Foullet
and executed by Augustin Pajou. The two female green patinated antique
bronze female
figures: on the right, Justice, very graciously resting on her elbow with a
sword in
one hand and a balance in the other; on the left: Wisdom, with a snake
symbolising
intelligence held in the left hand, and a mirror symbolising thinking and
self-knowledge. Rectangular base with acanthus leaves and pomegranate high
relief
on matted background, on a white marble plinth and toupee feet.
The overall equilibrium of this composition and the refinement of its execution,
along
with the exquisite quality of the original chafing make it a
particularly
sought after model from the neo-classical period in the decorative arts.
